 2016 Preview 


       Sand Rock completed the 2015 season with a 7-3 record. Last year Sand Rock just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region seven with a 4-3 region record.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Sand Rock ranked 17th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.8 points a game.

       Since 2010, Sand Rock has gone a combined 35-28. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 2A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sand Rock has managed to compile a record of 169-107. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 2A and 79th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

       The Wildcats are led by head coach Steven Chesnut who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-3 record in his first season at Sand Rock. The Wildcats saw improvement from a 5-5 record the season before coach Chesnut arrived. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Chesnut.

       Coach Chesnut's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 7-3 (70.0%).

       The Sand Rock Wildcats will play in Class 2A region six during the 2016 season. The Wildcats may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 3A to 2A. They will compete in region six this year. The Wildcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 57-46 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 2A and 89th in the AHSAA.

       The Wildcats should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. Sand Rock came up short of the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season this year.

       The Wildcats open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Plainview on Friday, August 26 at Plainview Stadium. Last year the Plainview Bears finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 3A region seven. The Bears lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Oakman by a score of 37-19.

       Sand Rock and Plainview have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 4-14-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2015 with Plainview winning by a score of 24-7.
